Free Online Textbooks Available Now!

At this time, there are a number of places to search for a free copy of your textbook.  The easiest searches are these:

Some of these platforms require registration using your RCCD email address, which should take 5-10 minutes. Instructions for registering can be found below. 

If one of the aggregator services like VitalSource or Redshelf doesn't provide the content you're seeking, contact the publisher directly and ask if there is a way to provide the content to you free of charge for the remainder of the semester.

Many other publishers are offering various free products, including access codes, journal articles, and tutorials

How to Register

How to register on Cengage Unlimited:

  1. Go to https://www.cengage.com/dashboard/#/login and click Create an Account - Student.
  2. Create an Account using your student (@student.rccd.edu) or staff account.
  3. Once you have signed in, click Start Trial in the sidebar. Then click Explore Cengage Unlimited (Note: After fourteen days you might have to again click the Start Trial button again to retain access).
  4. Click the magnifying glass icon in the top right corner of your dashboard to search for your textbooks. Searching by ISBN is recommended
  5. Click 'Add to My Home' to add the title to your dashboard.

How to register on RedShelf (must use https://studentresponse.redshelf.com/ for free content):

  1. Go to https://studentresponse.redshelf.com/ and click on the Log In button on the top right of the screen.
  2. Click Create an Account using your student (@student.rccd.edu) or staff account.
  3. Once you make an account, they will email you a link
  4. Click the link in your email to finish signing up
  5. Once you're signed in, go to the search page, and search for your book (or use the links from the above document)
  6. Click Add to My Shelf to check out the title.
  7. Now you can begin to read your text! Learn more at RedShelf responds.

How to register on VitalShelf:

  1. Go to https://bookshelf.vitalsource.com/ and make an account with your student (@student.rccd.edu) or staff email account.
  2. Once you make an account, they will email you a link
  3. Click the link in your email to finish signing up
  4. Once you're signed in, go to the search page, and search for your book (or use the links from the above document)
  5. Click on the picture of the book, and then click "borrow." 
  6. It will open up in your online browser. There are even options to print, bookmark, and virtually highlight the pages. There are also app options that you can learn about on the site. 
  7. Now you can begin to read your text! Learn more at VitalSource Helps

How to register for Internet Archive

Note: When you borrow an ebook from the Internet Archive, it will say that it is due in 14 days. You will be able to extend the due date until June 30, 2020, so that you can have access to the ebook for the entire Spring semester. See the FAQs for more information about access.
